Reading Railroad

Reading Railroad is a free event where JA members work to promote early childhood literacy in elementary age children. At the event, children participate in activities focused on reading to show kids that reading can be fun! We encourage children and parents to sign up for a library card and we help children sign up for the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Children also make crafts, spend time reading as a group, and are able to take as many books home as they would like.

This year Reading Railroad will have a Fall and Spring event. Our first event will took place at the JL King Center on September 10, which included a Story Walk and all of the activities listed above.

An initiative part of Reading Railroad, outside of the set events, we help stock Free Little Libraries throughout town that are in need of restocking. If you see a location that could use restocking, contact us!

We are also excited to be partnering with Oktibbeha County Hospital, giving books to children that come into the Emergency Room for care, through a program already set up through the hospital. This is yet another way to promote and encourage early childhood literacy in every home and in every child.
